About the ARTIK Beginner’s Guide

We’re excited to introduce guest blogger Cliff Wootton, who will tell us about the book he’s writing on developing with ARTIK. Cliff is a former Interactive TV systems architect at the BBC. He has taught IoT, multimedia, video compression, metadata, and how to build multimedia art installations for an MA course at the University of the Arts – London.

The Internet of Things (IoT) revolution is rapidly gaining pace. It has evolved naturally out of an increasingly connected world, and the number of devices connected to the Internet already outnumbers the number of people here on earth. The nature of the Internet will change in subtle ways as the ratio of devices to people continues to increase.

The stakes for IoT are huge and being early adopters gives us a significant advantage. We can do some solid preparatory work before the “Gold Rush” begins.

Samsung ARTIK will play an important part in IoT, as it will be integrated into devices and appliances for the general public. ARTIK architecture ensures that we can build securely connected devices to increase our leverage and integrate our product designs on a large scale. ARTIK devices will be readily accessible to developers and easy to experiment with as you start to learn about them.

Because the ARTIK platform is new to me, I documented my own journey as I discovered how to get my ARTIK working and wrote some software for it. Beginning Samsung ARTIK is an authentic journal that avoids the common problem of assuming too much prior knowledge with the material.

My time with ARTIK has gone remarkably well, and as with all new technologies, the learning process itself has been enjoyable.

The book first helps you set up your own ARTIK development system and get your ARTIK module up and running. I cover this from a Windows, Macintosh and Linux perspective. Then the book shows how you can develop your own applications for ARTIK. By the end of the book, you should have a working system, and be able to create and deploy some simple applications to your device. The goal is to help you lay a foundation for building with ARTIK.

In addition, not everyone is familiar with important background topics, such as how Linux works or why IP networks have so many configuration parameters. For readers who are unfamiliar with systems administration, I include some basic concepts to support you during the initial stages of your development. (And if you are familiar with these subjects, you can safely skip over those sections.)

I have been inspired by the posts in the ARTIK discussion forums. These steered me toward topics important to ARTIK developers. From my perspective, the forum posts translate into useful content for the book! Please continue to post questions on the forums. Provided they are posted before we go to print, I will try and cover as many as I can.

Quite early in the writing process, I realized that a single Beginner’s Guide wouldn’t be enough, and so I am already working on a reference book as a follow-up. For now, I hope this guide will help you on your journey toward becoming an expert ARTIK developer, and help you develop a new and profitable enterprise for IoT.
